Shadow Art

The children will trace their shadows to learn about God’s protection.

TOPICS:

God's Protection

MATERIALS:

Outside play: sidewalk chalk
Inside play: large flashlight, masking tape

DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutes

cross shadow

PREPARATION:

None needed.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Outside play: Find a safe place outside to use the sidewalk chalk. Then instruct the children to take turns tracing one anothers shadows. Lastly, ask the children to write Psalm 91:1 inside the shadows (if there is enough room).

Inside play: Ask for a helper to hold the flashlight and another helper to make the shadow. Have the flash light helper stand some distance away from the other helper and turn on the flash light. Then turn off the classroom lights and ask the remaining children to help you place tape around the shadow.

Application: Read Psalm 91:1 to the class:
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Ask, “Why do we like shade on a warm day (because it is cooler and protects us from the sun)?” Explain to the class that the verse refers to God’s shadow as protection for His children, just like a shadow protects us from the sun. However, just like our shadows are connected to us, we must draw near to God for His unwavering protection. We can get into trouble when we try to do things on our own without God’s help. This verse promises us that when we chose to stay near to God, we will receive His perfect protection!
