Spiritual Exercise

To grow stronger, we must exercise our minds, bodies and spirits.

TOPICS:

Spiritual Growth

MATERIALS:

Light dumbbell
Whiteboard, dry erase marker
Bible

DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutes

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

You will demonstrate how exercise makes you stronger mentally, physically and spiritually.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

(Pick up the light dumbbell) Do any of you know what this is and what it is used for? (Allow for responses) It is a light weight called a dumbbell which I use to exercise the muscles in my body. What happens when I exercise my muscles? (Allow for responses) Some of you may have answered correctly when you said that muscles get stronger and more useful when they are exercised.

(Write several math equations on the board which your students will be able to solve. Ask for one or more students to come up and complete the math exercises on the board. Thank the volunteer(s) and then ask them to sit down again.) What do they call what I wrote on the white board? (Allow for responses) Those who answered with math problems, equations, exercises or something similar are correct. Why do we do math exercises? (Again, wait for responses.)  Just as physical exercise builds are muscles and makes them more useful, activities such as math and other studies exercises our brains and helps them become more useful to us and others.

How can we exercise spiritually? (Allow for students to answer and then hold up the Bible.) You are correct if you thought that we grow spiritually by reading our Bibles, praying, attending Sunday school and church, etc.

When we fail to exercise - our minds, bodies and spirits can become lazy and less useful.
