THE RISE AND FALL OF SAUL - LESSON PREVIEWS

SERIES DESCRIPTION

This four lesson series about Saul illustrates what characteristics are needed to be a godly leader and what happens when we choose to follow our own selfish desires instead of trusting in the Lord.

Lesson 1 - A Cry For a King

This lesson illustrates the importance of waiting on God's timing and the consequences of not trusting God to provide for our needs. Memory Work - Psalm 33:20; Scripture Reading and Discussion - 1 Samuel 8:1-21. 

Application: Have we become restless, no longer waiting on the Lord and His timing? Do we listen to the Lord's counsel? Does our faith impact the world through our lives or does the world impact our lives and strip away our faith?

Lesson 2 - A King is Appointed

In this lesson children will see how God can direct the events in our lives to guide us towards what He has called us to accomplish. It is up to us to be obedient, follow the direction God provides and use the abilities that He has given us. Memory Work - Psalm 25:4; Scripture Reading and Discussion - 1 Samuel 9:1-4, 5-6, 15-17. 

Application: Saul's journey to become King began by simply being obedient to his father and going to look for the lost donkeys. God can use similar acts of obedience in our lives to begin the journeys that He has planned for us. Just as Saul sought out the help of Samuel, we should seek out the Godly resources that God places in our path to find those things which may be hidden from us.

Lesson 3 - The First King of Israel

This lesson illustrates the importance of living a life of faith in God and His provision, rather than relying on just our own strength and understanding. Memory Work - Psalm 20:7; Scripture Reading and Discussion - 1 Samuel 11:1-11; 13:5-6; 14:1-23; 15:1-31.

Application: Saul started out with humble beginnings, but his attitude quickly changed once he became King. Saul's focus became self-centered rather than God-centered. Saul sought the admiration of others more that he sought to please God. Do we tend to forget God when things are going well? How often do we take the credit, when we should instead be giving God the glory? 

Lesson 4 - A Jealous King

After completing this lesson, the children will see how jealousy and pursuing selfish desires can be destructive. Memory Work - Proverbs 27:4; Scripture Reading and Discussion - 1 Samuel 18:5-16.

Application: Pursuing selfish desires is destructive. We should rejoice with those whom God blesses and not be jealous of what they accomplish.
